Mock Trial Closing Statements

First off, Judy, representing the defense team and defendant George Milton delivered the closing statement for her side of the case. She started out by explaining the fact that the witnesses from the prosecution team don't have actual evidence, but only speculation. For instance, Mr. Smith wasn’t sure of what he said most of the time, for he said that his Luger was taken by Mr. Milton and then later on he said it was taken by Mr. Small. This resulted in a lot of sidebars and it was very confusing. Also, Marie Jones did not even know George Milton and Lennie Small that well, for she did not know of Mr. Small’s intellectual disability, so when he touched her dress she accused him of something and sent a lynching squad after him in Weed. Marie never really knew who they actually were and according to the defense, she shouldn't even be in this trial. Judy later proceeded to talk about Curley Tyler, when lawyer Charlie explained that Mr. Tyler might have wanted revenge on Mr. Small because he broke his hand in a fight and because of the murder of his wife. This shows that Mr. Tyler’s word isn't always trustable because of his biased opinion.

The person representing the prosecution side is Helena. She mentioned that Mr. Milton had told a lot of people that Mr. Small was a big burden on him and he would just be better off without him. One of the people who would get complaints from Mr. Milton about Mr. Small was former friend of the two, Chuck Long. Chuck Long is on the prosecution’s side because he was mad and stunned by the stunt that Mr. Milton had played on Mr. Small that caused him to stop traveling with them. Mr. Long saw that Mr. Milton was only trying to take advantage of Mr. Small and was just trying to make himself look smarter. The prosecution also included Josiah Lincoln, nicknamed Crooks, in their evidence because he explained how Mr. Milton was so in control of Mr. Small. Helena also introduced the prosecution’s theory about Mr. Milton’s plan to ruthlessly murder Mr. Small. She explained that Mr. Milton was wearing a denim jacket on the day of the murder - but there was no reason for him to be wearing that type of apparel since he lives in the Salinas Valley of California and it is very hot outside. The prosecution thinks he wore that denim jacket in order to conceal his murder weapon until he found Mr.Small in order to shoot him in the back of the head. After that, there wasn't any time for any further statements, but it doesn't matter because both sides had very convincing arguments, and it’s up to the jury now to decide George Milton's fate.
