Josiah Lincoln, also known by his nickname Crooks because of his crooked back, is a stable buck working on the ranch owned by John Tyler. People aren’t really that nice to him except for Mr. Johnson, Mr. Rogers, and Mr. Small. During the defensive questioning, their lawyer tried to make a connection between the fact that Crooks’ friends are also friends with Mr. Milton. The defense lawyer tried to use this point to prove that Mr. Milton is a nice person and his friends are caring so that should give no reason for him to ruthlessly murder his best friend, Mr. Small. Adding to that, the witness explained how when he met Mr. Milton and Mr. Small for the first time, he instantly saw the deep connection the two had. Mr. Lincoln said that they were so attached to each other and how much they needed each other in their lives. Crooks moved to Salinas Valley because of his dad. Himself and his brother moved to a new all-white school where they were the only people of color. When Mr. Lincoln grew up he needed to work somewhere and the only place that offered him a job was the Tyler ranch. When Mr. Small and Mr. Milton arrived on the ranch, Mr. Small had conversations with Mr. Lincoln that Mr. Milton wasn’t aware of because he was out with the rest of the ranch hands. When he came back he did not want Mr. Small talking with Mr.Lincoln anymore. So, Mr. Milton told Lennie to leave Crook’s room right away. The prosecution’s main argument was that Mr. Small did anything Mr. Milton told him to do, that Mr. Milton was the boss of Mr. Small, and that he was only taking advantage of him - which isn't exactly what friendship is.
