How Films of the 1930’s affected people during the Great Depression By:Sofia

The film industry during the 1930’s produced many movies that reached many struggling people and brought joy and happiness in the hardest of times to so many families. Movies provided a distraction for them, an escape from dealing with their economic hardships. Some of the highest rated movies of 1936-1937 include Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, A Star is Born, and My Man Godfrey. These movies were loved by thousands because they brought people together and helped them through their troubling times.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was an animated movie released by Disney in the year 1937. It is rated a 7.6/10 on IMDB. The movie was greatly loved by many folks at the time, and still is to this day. Critics loved it, unanimously. The movie grossed around $8 million which was an unbelievably insane amount at the time. It is simply animated, and has a simple plot and idea around it, but mainly it created a magic spark in so many kids and adults in the time of its release.

Another movie that was very popular was A Star is Born. The movie is about a young actress who’s looking to be a star, and ends up co-starring in an major motion picture. Just like Snow White, A Star is Born was also rated 7.6/10 on IMDB. This movie gave hope to people who felt that they couldn’t get anywhere in the life they were living. When people got together to watch this movie, hope and optimism was created for many, which has desperately needed during a time like the Great Depression. Even if it didn’t quite create aspiring hopes and dreams for all, it surely brought joy to loads of people.

My Man Godfrey was a comedy that was also widely popular through the 30’s. Released in 1936, it was about a wanderer man who was hired as a butler for a family, but he had some interesting quirks to him. The film got an 8.1/10 rating on IMDB. Even with its simple plot, this movie brought lots of joy and laughs to the struggling because of its witty satire. Altogether, My Man Godfrey was well created and loved by many people during the Great Depression.

All in all, movies released during the 1930’s helped people stay as cheerful as they could considering their situation. Some of the movies gave people hope for the future, and some just gave them a good laugh. These movies were vital for getting struggling families through this hard economic time because they brought joy and a temporary peace of mind to humankind.
